March 28, 2002, DALTON, GA - The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) announced the Health and Safety Award winners at the 31st annual Health and Safety Award Breakfast on March 21, at the NorthWest Georgia Trade and Convention Center.

The program was designed to increase the awareness of safety measures in the workplace and to support and give recognition to CRI member companies for their outstanding contributions to the health and safety of their employees. 

This year's first place company award for manufacturing went to Burtco Enterprises. Other companies recognized for safety performance in manufacturing were Amoco Fabrics & Fibers, Milliken & Company, Burlington Industries, and The Dixie Group.

The first place manufacturing facilities awards presented to company divisions were as follows:

Group A: Mohawk Industries, North Edmond Street
Group B: Milliken, Hillside
Group C: Amoco Fabrics & Fibers, Bainbridge
Group D: Amoco Fabrics & Fibers, Nashville
Group E: Burlington Industries/Lees Commercial, Glasgow.

The first place company award for distribution went to Amoco Fabrics and Fibers CompanyShaw Industries, Inc. distribution facilities also received a company award for safety performance.

The first place distribution facility awards presented to company divisions were as follows:

Group A: Shaw Industries, Inc., Plant WV
Group B: Shaw Industries, Inc., Plant #55
Group C: Shaw Industries, Inc.; Plant #79.

Other manufacturing and distribution centers were also recognized by CRI for their safety records.

"We were pleased that the attendance at the awards program exceeded 170 guests," said CRI director of human resources Charlott Coker.  "It was an outstanding program, and we are proud to continually recognize safety in the workplace."

265 participants in this program have earned a total of 121 safety awards.  Award recipients are determined by function and number of employees, and are ranked according to the number of occurrences of OSHA incidents as well as lost-time injuries and illnesses during a calendar year.

"Safety in the workplace is more than keeping employees safe around dangerous machines," said CRI president Werner Braun.  "It's also about providing an overall hazardous-free and drug-free working environment."

Speakers for the event included Susan Johnston, OSHA area director, and Neil Wasser, Attorney with Constangy, Brooks and Smith.
