November 6, 2001 DALTON, GA -- Following the Carpet and Rug Institute's (CRI)
Sustainability Report 2000, and in a continuing effort to communicate
the carpet industry's move toward sustainability, CRI is reporting today that
Matthew Realff, PhD., Professor of Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology,
has provided a correlation between the amount of energy reduction reported by
the carpet industry and the equivalence in the annual emissions of 226,000 cars.
This number of cars is equivalent to the approximate total number of cars licensed
annually in the Washington, D. C. area.
Werner Braun, president of CRI, stated, It's great to see that the reduction
of energy use in this industry is essentially equivalent to parking over a quarter
of a million cars. That's admirable, and a noteworthy step toward being a sustainable
industry. He continued, Carpet manufacturers have made and are making great
strides in energy conservation while focusing on creating high performance products
for the benefit of customers. The manufacturers are truly decreasing their
environmental footprints for the value of future generations.
