July 16, 2001, DALTON, GA - The Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), the industry trade association, announced today the release of the new 2001 issue of The Carpet Primer - a comprehensive guide to carpet construction, specification, installation, maintenance, indoor air quality, and recycling initiatives for designers, specifiers, facility managers, maintenance personnel, and building owners.

"The Carpet Primer will help obtain the best carpet performance by helping specifiers make informed judgments in their specifications for the appropriate carpet at a given location," said Werner Braun, president of the CRI. "It also will help clarify carpet's role in the indoor environment, provide facts about indoor air quality and inform users about industrial waste reduction and reuse and post-consumer carpet reuse and recycling."

The newly updated resource also is a valuable teaching tool to help students, designers, architects, and new carpet industry employees understand how carpet is made and specified. Some additions to the 2001 update include:

  • Extensive, new technical information, including static propensity and acoustics
  • Characteristics of patterned carpet and its installation
  • Updates on testing recommendations that are appropriate in a specification
  • New initiatives for industrial waste reduction and resource recovery (recycling)
  • In-depth information about understanding carpet yarn construction and density ratings
  • Inclusions for getting a good installation and proper maintenance

The Carpet Primer is offered in a loose-leaf, three-ring binder format for easy photocopying from the CRI for $25 (bulk prices are available). The Carpet Primer Resource Book is a coordinated, three-ring binder with samples of various backing and cushion systems, as well as carpet at every stage of production-from polymer pellets to finished carpet. The resource book, an excellent "hands-on" tool for helping to understand the look and feel of carpet components, is available for $150.
