CRI Builds Relationships in China

Jeff Carrier with one of the CCIA personnel responsible for GLP sample collectionIn June, CRI Sustainability and IAQ Program Manager Jeff Carrier and Vice-President Frank Hurd traveled to China to meet with representatives of the Chinese Carpet Industry Association (CCIA), at the association's headquarters in Tian Jian, near Beijing. The trip, according to Hurd, was designed to strengthen CRI's current relationships with CCIA and its members, specifically regarding the use of the Green Label Plus standard for indoor air quality testing. China is the largest user of GLP outside of the U.S., with 21 mills participating.

Carrier and Hurd began their visit with a tour of Shanghai's World Expo 2010, which featured a large exhibition of international carpets and rugs. Carrier observed, "Carpet and rugs play a prominent role in the history and current economies of many countries throughout the world. The World Expo gave me a great sense of the history involved and reminded me just how diverse the Jeff Carrier examines a handwoven ruguniverse of carpets and rugs is."

Carrier also attended the annual Qinghai Tibetan World Carpet Exhibition, where he met with hand and machine-woven rug producers from China, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Nepal, and Tibet. The GLP label was displayed prominently at the exhibition, Carrier says. He attended a dinner with the Secretary General of the Chinese Tibetan Carpet Association, was interviewed by several Chinese television stations, and discussed issues involved with traditional carpet manufacturing with the Vice-Governor of the Qinghai province. Of his treatment in Xining, Carrier says, "I was given the royal treatment the whole time."

The highlight of the trip was a dinner hosted by CCIA. Hurd and Carrier presented a program on Green Label Plus, the ANSI/NSF-140 Standard for Sustainability Assessment, the Carpet America Recovery Effort, and other technical issues related to carpet. "We clarified several issues about implementation and execution of the GLP program that will enhance the testing of Chinese product carpet. It is clear, from our extensive conversations with CCIA members and leadership, that Chinese manufacturers support the GLP standard over other indoor air quality testing programs."

CCRI presented CCIA President Madame Zhang with a plaque and an ornamental glass peach. "In China, the peach has significant symbolic meaning and is considered a token of health and longevity," Hurd said.
