CARE Holds Annual Meeting

Carpet America Recovery EffortThe Carpet America Recovery Effort held its 8th Annual Conference April 26-28, 2010 at the La Posada de Santa Fe Resort & Spa in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Attendance was sold out for the meeting, which featured educational sessions on reclamation, legislation, new product development, and international opportunities, plus an exhibition of technology suppliers to carpet recycling.

"The audience was enthusiastic, and there was a great deal of excitement about new projects, products, and processes in carpet reclamation, recycling, and reuse," said CARE Executive Director Georgina Sikorski. "Almost half of the attendees were new CARE members or attending a CARE meeting for the first time."

CARE Releases Annual Report

The CARE Board of Directors released its Annual Report that showed that in 2009, CARE members diverted more than 311 million pounds of post- consumer carpet from landfills. Of that amount, 246 million pounds - nearly 80 percent of the total - was recycled back into carpet and other consumer products. The industry also added 561 jobs directly linked to carpet recycling.

According to CARE Chairman Frank Hurd, the new jobs, plus a six percent increase in carpet diversion is especially heartening, given the state of the economy and its effects on the carpet industry.

"Before the last two years, you had to go back to 1975 and1976 to find two consecutive years of declining sales," Hurd said, noting that, in 2008, carpet recycling experienced its first-ever decline in carpet diversion. "We are proud of the turnaround we experienced in 2009 and the return to year-over-year increases in both carpet diversion and recycling."

CARE Awards Announced - Shaw Industries and Georgina Sikorski Receive Honors

Kevin Guthard, Vice President of Nyloboard and Jay Henry, Director of Operations Support for Shaw IndustriesShaw Industries and CARE Executive Director Georgina Sikorski were named CARE's Recycler and Person of the Year. Shaw was praised for its history of support for carpet recycling, and specifically for its current work on the Re2E (Reclaim to Energy), co- generation facility in Dalton, Georgia. The first of-its- kind facility will consume 76 million pounds of post- consumer and post-industrial carpet annually and will generate electricity and steam power for one of the company's carpet mills.

Another example cited of Shaw's forward-looking strategy is the company's Materials Recovery Strategic Business Unit, which is tasked with developing and marketing products derived from all types of post- consumer carpets.

Since joining CARE in 2009, Sikorski has helped to significantly increase both revenues and membership - CARE membership currently stands at 280, up from 50 just a year earlier. In addition, influenced by Sikorski's enthusiasm and skill at accomplishing goals, the CARE Board of Directors has made remarkable progress towards sustainable funding, developing end-markets for post-consumer carpet, and increasing awareness of CARE and its leadership position in carpet recycling.

CARE Executive Director Georgina Sikorski accepts CARE's Person of the Year Award

"Georgina Sikorski has done more in the last year than anyone else to further the goals of CARE. We are on the verge of putting in place a sustainable funding plan and without Georgina's leadership, drive and enthusiasm this would not have been possible. We are delighted to welcome her into a very elite group of CARE Persons of the Year. This is a richly deserved honor," said CARE Board Chairman Frank Hurd.
