SOA/GL Vacuum Program Seeks ANSI Certification; Green Label Program Phased Out

Two significant developments for the Carpet and Rug Institute's vacuum testing program are underway. First, CRI's vacuum testing has transitioned from the former Green Label program into the Seal of Approval/Green Label program. The Green Label program, which was based on gravimetrical testing for soil removal, phased out of existence on January 1, 2010. According to CRI Seal of Approval Manager Pat Jennings, vacuums tested solely under the Green Label program have been removed from the CRI website, and manufacturers of those machines may no longer use the Green Label Logo in their advertising and labeling.

In addition, preparations are currently underway for the SOA/GL vacuum program to earn certification from the American National Standards Institute, or ANSI. As part of the process, Jennings will be updating CRI's information on participating manufacturers.

New Green Building Assessment Tool Earns ANSI Certification

The Green Building Initiative (GBI) has earned ANSI certification for its Green Globes online green building and assessment tool. Green Globes is defined by the non-profit GBI as "a user-friendly and cost-effective way to rate a commercial green building." The standard, officially named ANSI/GBI 01-2010: Green Building Assessment Protocol for Commercial Buildings was derived from the Green Globes environmental design and assessment rating system for New Construction and was formally approved on March 24, 2010. The standard was developed following ANSI's highly regarded consensus-based guidelines, which are among the world's most respected for the development of consensus standards and ensure a balanced, transparent and inclusive process.

CRI Sustainability and Indoor Air Quality Manager Jeff Carrier, serves on the Green Globes board of directors. "The building community has been looking for a way to evaluate and certify the environmental performance of their projects. There are several rating systems available that will do that, however, existing rating systems have had problems with affordability, practicality, and credibility. With Green Globes, there is a rating system that addresses those needs. The increased affordability and practicality of the Green Globes system means that an already fast-growing green building industry will likely charge ahead even faster now that a viable successor to LEED has arrived. For the carpet industry, this means a renewed emphasis on producing products that are of the highest environmental characteristics. For the architect and design industry, this means more opportunity to bring clients into the world of green building in a satisfying and rewarding manner. The carpets we're producing today help them do that," Carrier said.
