The decision, effective December 31, 2009, replaces the state's previous California Gold standard for all state agency purchasing. ANSI/NSF 140-2007e, or the Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard NSF-140 is intended for commercial, hospitality, and similar carpets. Designers, facility managers, and government purchasers who want to ensure their purchases have the best sustainability performance should require NSF-140. The standard is third-party verified by auditors Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), UL Environment, and NSF, International. The California Gold Sustainable Carpet Standard was created to establish a method for State purchasers to ensure their purchases met the laws and sustainability objectives of the State of California. Closely modeled after the original Draft Standard NSF- 140 2005, The California Gold standard incorporated several additional prerequisites and provisions that enabled California purchasers to meet all state guidelines and objectives. Those provisions have been incorporated into the finalized ANSI/NSF 140- 2007e standard at its Platinum level of certification ensuring that the Platinum level also meets all California laws and objectives. As of December 31, 2009, all State carpet purchases must be certified to the Platinum level of NSF-140. Contact Jeff Carrier at 706.428-2115. In a letter to Georgia's 190 district superintendents, Ms. Cox noted that the Carpet and Rug Institute's Seal of Approval testing and certification program could help districts maximize cleaning and maintenance budgets by guiding them to the most effective products. This, in turn, would save money by reducing labor costs and extending the useful life of carpet. "In an era when school budgets are especially tight, it is my sense that using CRI Seal of Approval-certified products and equipment will save school districts money," Cox said. "CRI does not make, distribute or sell any of these products; it simply tests for performance to assure that the best products are being used to maintain carpet," she added. The SOA program certifies effective and environmentally responsible carpet cleaning solutions, vacuums, extractors, and cleaning systems. Consumer and commercial products are independently tested and lists of qualifying products are posted on the CRI Web site, carpet-rug.org. In addition, carpet cleaning professionals certified as Seal of Approval Service Providers are listed on the Web site by zip code and geographic area. Contact Bethany Richmond at 706.428-2125.
