Floor Covering Weekly GreenStep Awards Announced

Flooring trade publication Floor Covering News announced winners of their first-ever GreenStep awards September 15 at a luncheon held at Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center in Dalton.

Five companies and one person were recognized for their environmental efforts within the flooring industry. A total of eight awards were given - twice the number originally planned by the magazine - but a reflection of what FCW Publisher Sandy Montero called the flooring industry's "leadership role" in sustainability. In all, 75 nominations for the awards were received by the magazine - enough to justify adding a series of Environmental Leadership Awards. Winners in the four categories - Product, Process, Promotion and Pinnacle (a person or company that went beyond professional duty) - were selected by a panel of judges picked by the magazine that included CRI Vice-President Frank Hurd.

GreenStep Award Winners

  • Promotion: Bostik adhesives for its Website.
  • Process: Shaw Industries for its Evergreen Nylon Recycling facility in Augusta, which is designed to recycle millions of pounds of post-consumer nylon carpet.
  • Product: Mohawk Industries for its Sorona flooring products, which are now bio-based instead of 100 percent petroleum-based. The new polymer is made from 37 percent renewable resource - currently corn.
  • Pinnacle: Shaw Industries for the company's overall environmental efforts.

Environmental Leadership Awards

  • Promotion: Shaw Industries for its Green Edge program, the comprehensive environmental communications program used both inside and outside the company.
  • Process: Interface for its Re-Entry 2.0 program that recycles post-consumer nylon carpet and carpet backing.
