CRI Issues Hire Act Press Release

CRI has issued a nationally-distributed press release in an effort to bring attention to an important piece of proposed legislation designed to provide a stimulus for the home improvement and building products industries. HR 3382, which is known as the HIRE Act, for Home Improvement Revitalize the Economy, has been introduced in Congress and referred to the House Ways and Means Committee.

The HIRE Act proposes tax credits for home improvement purchases. It is supported by a broad coalition of home furnishings and building products manufacturers, including CRI, American Home Furnishings Alliance, WFCA, Hardwood Federation, International Wood Products Association, International Sleep Products Association, and Resilient Floor Covering Association, among others.

The HIRE Act still needs additional sponsors in the House, as well as companion legislation in the Senate. CRI urges individuals and businesses to express their support for the HIRE Act by writing to their elected representatives, and they have provided a summary of the bill and a sample letter PDF (PDF 68 KB) Need help with PDF? to help simplify the communication process.

Frank Hurd Presents at ALEC Meeting

On Wednesday, July 15, CRI Government Affairs Director Frank Hurd addressed the Environmental Health Working Group (EHWG) at the annual meeting in Atlanta of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). ALEC is the nation's largest individual membership organization of state legislators, and the meeting brought together nearly 2,000 state legislators, private-sector members, government representatives, and public-policy experts to confront the issues facing our 50 states.

CRI Government Relations Director Jennifer Mendez is the private sector co-chair for the EHWG. Mr.Hurd spoke on how carpet contributes to our quality of life. Ms. Mendez explained that, due to the number of states that have introduced legislation regarding extended producer responsibility, the working group aims to educate legislators about voluntary programs like CRI's Green Label Plus that are already in place and could take the place of government-mandated programs.

CRI Blog Inspires Editorial

Floor Covering NewsA story that appeared on the Carpet and Rug Institute Blog in May was the subject of an editorial in the July 20/27 issue of Floor Covering News. Al Wahnon's editorial, titled, Truth or Consequences, reacts to a CRI blog post about an article titled, "Can Your Rug Make You Sick?" that appeared in Health magazine. The CRI blog talked about the frustrations that often come with working with the consumer media and the difficulty in dealing with the widespread myths about carpet as a safe and healthy floor covering.

FCN Publisher Al Wahnon echoes those sentiments in his article, saying, "I find it interesting that there are people who hold positions they know are untenable, illogical and downright stupid. They refuse to recognize facts, resist intelligence and ignore truth. These people are not easy to deal with and more difficult to understand."

CRI appreciates the support of Floor Covering News and other flooring media for their support on this and many other issues. The Carpet and Rug Institute and President Werner Braun welcome questions about carpet and are eager to provide credible answers based on scientific research.
