In This Issue: Seal of Approval Family Continues to Grow
Nilodor Inc., of Bolivar, Ohio has received certification for its Oxy-Force Concentrate Spot Remover. This marks the third SOA-approved solution for the company. 3M Building and Commercial Services Division of London, Ontario, Canada has earned approval for its Scotchgard Pretreatment Cleaner Intermediate No 28L Pre-spray. The Oreck Manufacturing Company of Cookeville, Tennessee has added a new member to their roster of SOA-approved vacuums - the Oreck Halo 100. Congratulations to our new SOA products! The SOA designation certifies that the product has passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory. The tests for spot removers, pre- sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change). To earn the CRI Seal of Approval/Green Label certification, vacuums must pass independent laboratory tests for soil removal, dust retention, and carpet fiber protection. The rug, titled "Mimosa," was designed by internationally renowned artist, Henri Matisse. The piece is a textile art work in which the resources of modern industry enhance the visual statement of an exceptional artist. At the time of its creation, Matisse said of the rug, "I want to recapture the freshness of vision which is characteristic of extreme youth; when all the world is new."
Robert Saunders, 91, passed away in Charleston, S.C. on Dec. 24, 2008. Saunders had a long career in the flooring industry starting with Mohawk Industries prior to World War II. After serving in the war, Saunders resumed his career with Mohawk and served as president of two Mohawk Industries' subsidiaries in the 1950s. According to Mac Ryland, a long-time business associate, Saunders built the first large Southern carpet mills for Mohawk - the Dixiana Mills in Dillon, S.C. and the Oak River plant in Bennettsville, S.C. Robert Saunders retired in 1982 as vice-president with the Atlanta office of Kurt Salmon Associates, an international consultancy for retail and healthcare facilities. Mr. Saunders is remembered for his integrity and attention to detail during a career of over 40 years of service to the carpet industry. Contact Louise Dobbs at 706.428-2104. Vermont Pulls Negative Carpet Content from State-Sponsored WebsiteAt the urging of CRI Government Relations Manager Jennifer Mendez, Dr. Wendy Davis, Vermont Commissioner of Health has removed incorrect information about carpet and indoor air quality from a section of the state-sponsored Department of Health website. The sharply negative information on the site came to the attention of CRI President Werner Braun when a CRI member sent him a link to the site. Ms. Mendez followed up with Dr. Davis' office, and promptly received a call from Vermont State Toxicologist, Dr. Bill Bress, who agreed to remove the incorrect and inflammatory information from the site. Following the conclusion of Vermont's legislative session at the end of April, Ms. Mendez will travel to Vermont to work with Dr. Bress' office to get the appropriate information regarding carpet and indoor air quality onto their website.
