Five New Solutions Earn SOA Certification

CRI Seal of ApprovalCRI announces the addition of 5 new solutions and two cleaning systems under the CRI Seal of Approval Program, making a total of 237 products certified under the program. The SOA program continues to grow, supported by increasing numbers of carpet manufacturers who link carpet warranties to the use of CRI SOA-approved products.

New to the SOA solutions list: Heavy Duty Prespray SC from Johnson/Diversey, an international firm headquartered in Stutevant, Wisconsin; Simple Green® Carpet Cleaner (pre-spray) from Sunshine Makers, Inc., of Huntington Harbour, California, Time Savers 2 in 1 Carpet Pre-Treat and Steam Cleaner from Don Asletts Cleaning Center, Pocatello, Idaho, and New Dawn manufacturing's Spectra Triad 26 and Spectra Triad 5 in-tank solutions.

The SOA designation certifies that the product passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions. The tests for spot removers, pre- sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

Two New Seal of Approval Systems Announced

Seal of Approval - Gold, Silver, Bronze FanCongratulations to the Betco Corporation of Toledo, Ohio for achieving SOA certification for their Fiberpro FP8 and Fiberpro FP20 cleaning systems. Both of these systems earned gold level certification under the systems testing program.

The SOA designation certifies that these products have passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory. The systems testing take into consideration the equipment being used as well as the solutions in combination. All solutions must pass the protocol for SOA certification and the equipment testing measures soil and water removal as well as texture retention. There are currently 46 systems now in place. The systems testing are rated gold, silver or bronze level according to efficacy.

Green Label Plus Carpet Complies With REACH

Preregistration requirements for the European Union's Registration, Evaluation, and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH) program show that chemicals involved in CRI Green Label Plus Carpet comply with REACH regulations. Only two chemicals from the Green Label Plus program, Methybiphenyl (CAS# 28652-72-4) and 4-phenylcyclohexene (CAS#4994-16- 5), are not preregistered under the looming REACH program deadlines. The two items not preregistered are not listed on Annex 17 Substances of Very High Concern list and will be below the general limit of 1 metric tonne annually.

Proprietary topical treatments and other substances used in the manufacture of carpet may still require preregistration.

Hilton Hotels Approves Post-consumer Carpet Cushion for use Nationwide

Hilton Hotels approved the use of a synthetic carpet cushion made from 90% post-consumer carpet fibers for use in their hotels nationwide. The increasing use of post-consumer carpet cushion will have a significant impact on the overall diversion of post- consumer carpet from our nation's landfills. Ronald J. Greitzer, President of Reliance Carpet Cushion / Los Angeles Fiber, said, "The answer to recycling waste carpet is to develop the demand for products with post-consumer content. If every hotel started to use synthetic cushion manufactured from post-consumer carpet fibers instead of post-industrial virgin fibers or imported rebond foam, then carpet recycling would become a successful industry."

Hilton Hotel's dedication to environmental sustainability and their willingness to think outside the box pertaining carpet recycling should be applauded. "Hilton's approval of post-consumer carpet cushion is a very large step for the carpet recycling industry. If other organizations and government entities agreed to take similar actions to procure materials made from post-consumer carpet and recycle their old carpet, the 5 billion pounds of old carpet that goes into our landfills each year would significantly be reduced," explains Frank Hurd, Chairman of the Carpet America Recovery Effort.

CRI Sponsors Fix Housing First Coalition

The Carpet and Rug Institute has joined a broad-based coalition to find solutions to the housing crisis called Fix Housing First. The group seeks to create explicit statutory language permitting a tax credit or a refund anticipation loan to be an acceptable source of down payment for home buyers. The group also seeks to create a temporary 30-year, fixed rate mortgage of 2.99% through 6/30/09, increasing to 3.99% through 12/31/09. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac could then purchase these low rate, FHA insured loans from lenders at full price and resell them at lower market prices, thus subsidizing the difference.
