New Standard Simplifies Identification of Carpets with Sustainable Attributes

NSF InternationalThe carpet industry is among the most progressive in the country in addressing the potential human health, environmental and sustainability factors of its products. Over the years, significant progress has been made in reducing the environmental footprint of carpet, including landfill use, carbon dioxide emissions, energy consumption, waste generation, water usage and hazardous air pollutants per square yard of carpet produced.

The next step in achieving sustainability is the market's use of a tough new comprehensive standard based on science and backed by diverse stakeholders. In the past week, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved NSF 140-2007, Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard PDF (PDF 75 KB) Need help with PDF?, as an American National Standard.

NSF 140-2007 is the first multi-attribute American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved Standard for environmentally preferable building materials. The carpet industry is the first to have a unified sustainable Standard for the entire United States.

The purpose of NSF 140-2007 is to provide a market- based definition for a path to sustainable carpet, and establish performance and environmental requirements for public health and environment, energy and energy efficiency, biobased, recycled content and EPP materials, manufacturing, and reclamation and end-of-life management. The Standard addresses the triple bottom line, economic- environmental-social, throughout the supply chain.

For almost five years, a multi-stakeholder group, including federal and state government representatives, end users, manufacturers and other stakeholders worked through a consensus driven approach to define the criteria for a more sustainable carpet, under the guidance of NSF International. NSF International, The Public Health and Safety Company, a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, is a world leader in standards development, product certification, education, and risk- management for public health and safety.

The resulting NSF 140-2007 Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard was open to public comment and voting, and was approved by ANSI. This new Standard will become the unified Standard for sustainable carpet in the United States.

The first carpet products certified against the approved Standard are expected to be available in the marketplace by the second quarter of 2008. For more information on NSF 140-2007, Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard, please call 1-800-673-6275 or visit the NSF Website.
