Trio of Solutions Earn SOA Designation

CRI Seal of ApprovalThe addition of three more cleaning solutions into the CRI Seal of Approval family continues the trend of more and more solutions earning certification as word continues to spread that some carpet manufacturers have made a decision to tie carpet warranties to the use of CRI SOA-approved products.

All three of the new SOA products are spot removers, bringing the total of approved products to 148 in the solution portion of the SOA program.

I-Simplicity Pet Odor and Spot Eliminator, Enzyme Stain and Odor Remover and Odorlogic Oxyquick Spot and Stain Remover each passed as spot removers to join the list of certified solutions.

I-Simplicity Pet Odor and Spot Eliminator is manufactured by Global Synergey Group, LLC out of Marietta, GA., Enzyme Stain and Odor Remover is made by Cleanline Products, Inc., headquartered in Canton, TX., and Odorlogig OxyQuick Spot and Stain Remover is a Doctors Foster & Smith product manufactured in Rhinelander, WI.

Each product passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions. The tests for spot removers, pre-sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

Three Systems Earn Bronze Certification

SOA Extractors - Gold, Silver, Bronze FanThe Tennant R14 System, Nobles Strive Rider System, and the Aramark R14 System, each passed the battery of tests to earn certification as a Seal of Approval Deep Cleaning Systems in the SOA Program.

The deep cleaning system is the combination of that machine and a particular cleaning solution, following a set procedure. The cleaning solution is tested under the protocol for the solutions testing and then a set procedure is designated and followed. The product is then tested, like the extractors, for soil removal, water retention and texture retention.

All three systems earned bronze level certification. The Tennant R14 system is manufactured by the Tennant Company out of Minneapolis, MN, the Nobles System is made by Nobles Industries, headquartered in Holland, MI., and the Aramark system is is out of Downers Grive, IL.

There are now a total of 34 systems earning certification in the category.

A Closer Look at the SOA Program

What a difference a year makes!

A year ago at this time, there were exactly 127 products which had been certified in one of the three Seal of Approval Programs. Today, that number has grown to 257 total products that have earned certification in in either the SOA Solutions, the SOA Extractors, or the SOA Deep Cleaning Systems category.

Looking a little closer at the numbers, aside from all the new products that have come into the program the number of manufacturers represnted has risen from 69 to 120 in the same time span.

Canadian Group Recommends Carpet to battle Acoustic Problems

The Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (CASLPA) recently released a report that might prove good news for carpet. The group has alerted parents that a noisy classroom can affect a child's ability to learn.

With children back in school for a new year, audiologists and speech-language pathologists advise parents to be aware of the noise conditions in their children's classrooms. Children, who primarily learn through listening, need a learning environment in which they can fully hear and understand the teacher's instructions.

A newly released study found that many classrooms had poor quality acoustics and that children were often working in below standard classroom listening conditions (Rubin, Flagg-Williams and Aquino Russell, August 2007). Results from a Canadian Language and Literacy Research Network study show that one in six words is not understood by the average Grade 1 student due to excessive background noise and poor acoustics in Canadian classrooms.

The CASLPA group recommended the use of carpet in schools as a way to combat poor acoustics.

CARE Wins P2AD Honor

P2ADThe Pollution Prevention Assistance Division (P2AD) recognized business leaders from across the state recently for making strides toward a more sustainable Georgia at its annual Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia conference and awards ceremony. Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) of Dalton received the Advocate of the Year award.

"Carpet America Recovery Effort stood out as a role model in the Partnership as it worked with Partners and others in the carpet industry to encourage waste reduction through the recycling and reuse of post- consumer carpet. Moreover, CARE promoted the Partnership Program to its peers throughout the year," said Suzanne Burnes, manager of the Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia. "We look to see other organizations in Dalton and all of Georgia follow their lead."

P2AD is a non-regulatory division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Since 1993, P2AD has provided free, confidential environmental technical assistance in the areas of pollution prevention, resource conservation, waste reduction, by-product reuse and recycling. In 2004, P2AD established the P2AD Partnership Program, now called the Partnership for a Sustainable Georgia, to foster environmental leadership and recognize superior environmental performance. It is free and open to any business or organization that operates in Georgia. The Partnership offers a variety of incentives, including cost savings through increased efficiencies, potential regulatory flexibility, free technical assistance and training, and access to networking and mentoring among peers, state and local officials.
