Five More Solutions Earn SOA Designation

CRI Seal of ApprovalThe addition of six cleaning solutions into the CRI Seal of Approval family continues the trend of more and more solutions earning certification as word continues to spread that some carpet manufacturers have made a decision to tie carpet warranties to the use of CRI SOA-approved products.

Three of the new SOA products are spot removers, while two are pre-sprays and one an in-tank bringing the total of approved products to 143 in the solution portion of the SOA program.

E-Z Out, VonSchrader Spot Remover, and Multi- Purpose Oxy-Force RTU each passed as spot removers and joined pre-sprays Kick Pro Concentrate, Simple Green Clean Building Carpet Cleaner Concentrate and in-tank solution Code: Green on the list of certified solutions.

E-Z Out is manufactured by Cal-Flor Accessory Systems out of Chico, CA, VonScrader Spot Remover is made by the VonScharder Company headquartered in Racine, WI., and Multi-Purpose Oxy-Force RTU is a Nilodor, Inc. product manufactured in Bolivar, OH. Kick Pro Concentrate is made by Earth Co Products LLC out of Oceonside, CA, and Simple Green Clean Building Carpet Cleaner Concentrate is a Sunshine Makers, Inc. product out of Huntington Harbour, CA. Code: Green is manufactured by CleanCraft Products, Inc. which is headquartered in Dyer, IN.

Each product passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions. The tests for spot removers, pre-sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

Four Extractors Join SOA Family

SOA Extractors - Gold, Silver, Bronze FanFour new truck mount units have been added to the Seal of Approval category for extractor equipment certifying the products meet the highest of performance standards by earning Gold level status.

Three of the newly certified units are truck mounts manufactured by White Magic Inc., out of Salisbury, MA. The PRO-1000 w/ Max Extractor, the PRO-1200 and the PRO-1000 has each earned Gold distinction in the program. They are joined by newcomer R&R Briggs, Inc with their EV-4 w/2 Jet 95-03 unit. R&R Briggs is located in Southhampton, PA.

Each of these units can now assure customers that their extractors removes stains and soil from carpet without damaging the carpet pile or causing resoiling problems at the highest of levels.

The CRI Seal of Approval program tests the effectiveness of carpet cleaning equipment and certifies deep cleaning extractors that effectively remove soil without damage to the carpet. Not all extractors are good enough to earn this distinction; the blue and green seal helps customers recognize they are buying quality products.

An independent laboratory administers the CRI Seal of Approval testing for extractors. To quality for the Seal, extractors must meet stringent standards in all three-test categories:

  • Amount of soil removed from the carpet
  • Amount of residual moisture removed from the carpet from a wet cleaning process
  • Impact of the equipment on carpet fibers and appearance

In addition, soil removal efficiency is rated on three levels. Extractors that exceed average soil removal receive a Bronze Seal rating. Those achieving higher soil removal receive a Silver rating and those receiving the highest level of measurable soil removal are awarded a Gold level Seal of Approval. A total of 55 extractors have earned SOA certification.

Millicare System Earns Bronze Certification

The Millicare System, using the Millicare Pre-Mist NXT followed by the Dry Carpet Cleaner, passed the battery of tests to earn certification as a Seal of Approval Deep Cleaning Systems in the SOA Program.

The deep cleaning system is the combination of that machine and a particular cleaning solution, following a set procedure. The cleaning solution is tested under the protocol for the solutions testing and then a set procedure is designated and followed. The product is then tested, like the extractors, for soil removal, water retention and texture retention.

The Millicare System earned a bronze certification under the systems protocol. Millicare Systems is a product of MilliCare Textile and Carpet Care out of LaGrange, GA, and is the 31st system to earn certification.

Hilton Hotel Corporation Supports SOA

Hilton Hotel Corporation has partnered with The Carpet and Rug Institute, Inc. to commit to promoting the use of only Seal of Approval products and/or Service Providers in the Cleaning and Maintenance of the carpet in their facilities. This agreement does not extend to their franchises but Hilton Hotel Corporation will use The Carpet and Rug Institute, Inc. resources to educate and provide information pertinent to increasing the longevity of the carpet in the Hilton Hotels.

CRI is also exploring several other initatives at this time to encourage widespread support and use of Seal of Apporval Products and Service Providers across the country.

Braun Speaks to Dixie Group Sales Force

CRI President Werner Braun addressed the Dixie Group Sales Force at its recent meeting in Chattanooga, emphasizing the role that the sales force plays in helping CRI multiply the messages it has developed for the industry. Braun presented the group with information on each of CRI's signature programs (Seal of Approval, and Green Label) and provided data currently being used to debunk many of the myths that are making their way into the market place and might have an effect on the sale of soft floor covering.

If anyone is interested in having Braun meet with their sales force to drive home the messages, please contact James Beach.

NHBA Mentions Green Label in Green Standard

National Green Building StandardA Draft of the National Green Building Standard will soon be available for second public comment period starting in October. The document compiled by the National Home Builders Association includes reference to the CRI Green Label and Green Label Plus Program as ways to secure credit points in its chapter on indoor air quality.

This credit reference is a direct result of CRI's work with them several years ago during the initial drafting of the guidelines.
