Six More Solutions Earn SOA Designation

CRI Seal of ApprovalA total of six new cleaning solutions have joined the mix of Seal of Approval products certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute via an independent testing laboratory.

Two of the new SOA products are pre-sprays, while the other four are spot removers bringing the total of approved products to 129 in the solution portion of the SOA program.

Chem Dry's Grease and Oil Spot remover, Stain Extinguisher and Stain Extinguisher: Grease and Oil Spot remover join Stanley Steemer Professional Carpet and Upholstery Spot Remover in the list of spot removers. Easy Green Traffic Cleaner and Easy Green Rinse, a pair of products produced by Steamway International, were the two pre-sprays earning designation. Steamway International is headquartered in Denver, CO., while Chem-Dry is located in Logan, UT., and Steamway is headquarted out of Dublin, OH.

Each product passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions. The tests for spot removers, pre-sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

Eight Extractors Join SOA Family

SOA Extractors - Gold, Silver, Bronze FanAnother US Products portable has been added to the Seal of Approval category for extractor equipment certifying the product meet the highest of performance standards by earning Gold level status and is joined by seven other extractors which have earned bronze level certification.

The Solus 310 extractor, manufactured by US Products out of Coeur d'Alene, ID., earned the highest level in soil removal. Kent-Euroclean's Klenzor 16, Clarke's Clean Track 16, Clean Track 18, Clean Track 18 Wash and Rinse, Steamway's 4100 LX Mastematic, 4100 Galaxy and the Advance Aquaclean 16ST each earned certification at the bronze level. Each machine can now assure customers that their extractors removes stains and soil from carpet without damaging the carpet pile or causing resoiling problems at the highest of levels.

Advance and Kent-Euroclean are both headquartered in Plymouth, MN, while Clarke is located in Springdale, AR., and Steamway is headquartered in Denver, CO.

The CRI Seal of Approval program tests the effectiveness of carpet cleaning equipment and certifies deep cleaning extractors that effectively remove soil without damage to the carpet. Not all extractors are good enough to earn this distinction; the blue and green seal helps customers recognize they are buying quality products.

An independent laboratory administers the CRI Seal of Approval testing for extractors. To quality for the Seal, extractors must meet stringent standards in all three-test categories:

  • Amount of soil removed from the carpet
  • Amount of residual moisture removed from the carpet from a wet cleaning process
  • Impact of the equipment on carpet fibers and appearance

In addition, soil removal efficiency is rated on three levels. Extractors that exceed average soil removal receive a Bronze Seal rating. Those achieving higher soil removal receive a Silver rating and those receiving the highest level of measurable soil removal are awarded a Gold level Seal of Approval. A total of 63 extractors have earned SOA certification.

CRI Teams Up With WFCA

World Floor Covering Association (WFCA)Presidents from both the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI) and World Floor Covering Association (WFCA) joined together to pen a letter explaining CRI's Seal of Approval Program. Werner Braun and Chris Davis co-authored the letter that was sent out to the WFCA membership to help explain how the program works, what it means to the retailers, and how those individual carpet companies that have tied warranties to the use of SOA products effects retailers.

CRI has also teamed up with the WFCA on another initiative regarding carpet recycling. Recently several WFCA Affiliate Associations inquired concerning available speakers on the topic of "Green," and have been referred to CARE. Bob Peoples has spoken to their memberships at a couple of different venues.
