Two More Solutions Earn SOA Designation

CRI Seal of ApprovalThe addition of two more cleaning solutions into the CRI Seal of Approval family continues the trend of more and more solutions earning certification as word continues to spread that some carpet manufacturers have made a decision to tie carpet warranties to the use of CRI SOA-approved products.

Both of the new SOA products are pre-sprays, and both are manufactured by Superior Chemical Corporation, headquartered in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Spot Master and Traffic Master each passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions. The tests for spot removers, pre-sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

There are now a total of 118 solutions in the SOA Program.

Bane-Clene Adds Eight Extractors to SOA Program

SOA Extractors - Gold, Silver, Bronze FanA total of eight new truck mount extractors - all made by Bane-Clene® Corp -- have been added to the Seal of Approval category for extractor equipment certifying the products meet the highest of performance standards by earning Silver level status.

The Duo-Mount®, Maxi-Mount®, Mini-Mount®, Para- Mount®, Perma-Mount® 120, Perma-Mount® 70, Ultra- Port® Basic, and Ultra-Port® Deluxe, each manufactured by Bane-Clene® Corp, out of Indianapolis, Indiana, can now assure customers that their extractors removes stains and soil from carpet without damaging the carpet pile or causing resoiling problems at the highest of levels.

The CRI Seal of Approval program tests the effectiveness of carpet cleaning equipment and certifies deep cleaning extractors that effectively remove soil without damage to the carpet. Not all extractors are good enough to earn this distinction; the blue and green seal helps customers recognize they are buying quality products.

An independent laboratory administers the CRI Seal of Approval testing for extractors. To quality for the Seal, extractors must meet stringent standards in all three-test categories:

  • Amount of soil removed from the carpet
  • Amount of residual moisture removed from the carpet from a wet cleaning process
  • Impact of the equipment on carpet fibers and appearance

In addition, soil removal efficiency is rated on three levels. Extractors that exceed average soil removal receive a Bronze Seal rating. Those achieving higher soil removal receive a Silver rating and those receiving the highest level of measurable soil removal are awarded a Gold level Seal of Approval. A total of 55 extractors have earned SOA certification.

Braun Named to NAM Advocacy Committee

CRI President Werner Braun was recently invited to serve as a member of the Advocacy Committee for the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). The NAM's Council of Manufacturing Associations recently restructured its Government Relations Committee into this new Advocacy Committee. The new committee will work closely with the NAM policy staff in determining priority issues on which the Council can focus its efforts and also look at the ways in which Council members can actively participate in the advocacy efforts.

StarNet Presents First Environmental Award at Annual Meeting

StarNetThe StarNet Annual Membership Meeting held this month in Phoenix, Arizona was very special in several ways. The festive occasion marked the 15th "Birthday" of the Cooperative and the introduction of Jeanne Matson, new President and CEO of the cooperative, who is replacing Lori Dowling on her retirement later this month. The event also marked the 10th Anniversary of presentation of the StarNet Design Awards, which included the first award for a new category - "Environmental Achievement". Dr. Bob Peoples, Executive Director of CARE, presented this award to Ian Martin, Vice President of Commercial Sales for Great Floors. The Spokane Convention Center Expansion Project (Silver LEED) is the winning entry. In presenting this new prestigious award, Dr. Peoples commented that when the power of a winning organization, and StarNet is a winning organization, gets behind carpet recycling we greatly increase our odds for success.

Mr. Rick Fedrizzi, President and Founder of USGBC was the keynote speaker of this environmentally focused event. His dynamic presentation was enthusiastically received by the entire StarNet Membership and its assembled manufacturing partners. Mr. Fredrizzi praised StarNet Members for assuming an environmental leadership role in the commercial flooring industry. He emphasized the need for and encouraged continued diligence in making a positive environmental impact on our world.

A new annual award was also announced, the StarNet/CARE Carpet Reclamation Award. All StarNet Members are participating in this initiative to track landfill diversion of post consumer carpet. Two Members (medium and large categories) will be recognized for the most post consumer carpet landfill diverted in a 12 month period as well as their timely reporting. The award will be presented in Orlando, Florida at the next StarNet Annual Membership Meeting.

During the report of StarNet's Environmental Issues Committee several StarNet Members were recognized for their local carpet reclamation initiatives. Fred Williamson, StarNet Director of Special Projects, noted that the StarNet/CARE partnership continues to grow and is keep StarNet Members on the cutting edge of carpet reclamation developments. In his remarks to the StarNet Membership, Dr. Bob Peoples provided a current status on Sustainability issues impacting the carpet industry including the latest developments in Green Label Plus and the Seal of Approval program, both of which impact the useful fife of a carpet and can help reduce the environmental footprint. In addition, the new green carpet standard, NSF 140, was also reviewed.
