Eight More Solutions Earn SOA Designation

CRI Seal of ApprovalThe addition of eight cleaning solutions into the CRI Seal of Approval family continues the trend of more and more solutions earning certification as word continues to spread that some carpet manufacturers have made a decision to tie carpet warranties to the use of CRI SOA-approved products.

Five of the new SOA products are pre-sprays, while two are spot removers and one an in-tank bringing the total of approved products to 112 in the solution portion of the SOA program.

Procyon Carpet & Upholstery Cleaner, Procyon Spot and Stain Remover and Procyon Plus join Resistech Carpet Maintenance Treatment and Green Balance Carpet Pre-Spray on the list of certified pre-sprays in the program. All three of the Procyon products are manufactured by Plus Manufacturing, headquartered in Spokane, WA. Resistech is manufactured by DuPont and sold exclusively through INVISTA out of Kennesaw, GA., and Green Balance is made by Bridgepoint Systems, out of Salt Lake City, UT.

Bridgepoint Systems also had two spot removers and an in-tank solution pass the SOA test. Avenge Spotter, Home Pro Spotter and Green Balance Carpet Extraction Rinse each earned the certification for Bridgepoint Systems.

Each product passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions. The tests for spot removers, pre-sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

Another U.S. Products Extractor Earns Gold

CRI Seal of Approval - Gold, Silver, BronzeUS Products has added yet another portable to the Seal of Approval category for extractor equipment certifying the products meet the highest of performance standards by earning Gold level status for a 13th machine.

The King Cobra 1200 Pro, manufactured by US Products out of Coeur d'Alene, ID., can now assure customers that it removes stains and soil from carpet without damaging the carpet pile or causing resoiling problems at the highest of levels.

The CRI Seal of Approval program tests the effectiveness of carpet cleaning equipment and certifies deep cleaning extractors that effectively remove soil without damage to the carpet. Not all extractors are good enough to earn this distinction; the blue and green seal helps customers recognize they are buying quality products.

An independent laboratory administers the CRI Seal of Approval testing for extractors. To quality for the Seal, extractors must meet stringent standards in all three-test categories:

  • Amount of soil removed from the carpet
  • Amount of residual moisture removed from the carpet from a wet cleaning process
  • Impact of the equipment on carpet fibers and appearance

In addition, soil removal efficiency is rated on three levels. Extractors that exceed average soil removal receive a Bronze Seal rating. Those achieving higher soil removal receive a Silver rating and those receiving the highest level of measurable soil removal are awarded a Gold level Seal of Approval. A total of 47 extractors have earned SOA certification.

CARE Receives Award for Stewardship

Bob Peoples excepts the Dan Eberhardt Environmental Stewardship Award
Bob Peoples excepts the Dan Eberhardt
Environmental Stewardship Award

The Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) was presented the Society of Plastic Engineers' (SPE) Dan Eberhardt Environmental Stewardship Award on March 7th during the 2007 GPEC Conference in Orlando, Florida. The SPE Plastics Environmental Division recognized CARE for its achievement in the recovery, reuse, and recycling of post-consumer carpet. An award from the Society of Plastic Engineers highlights the fact that CARE significantly contributes to the overall recovery and recycling of thermoplastics in the United States through carpet landfill diversion. Since its inception in 2002, CARE has helped to keep over 1/2 billion pounds of post-consumer carpet out of landfills. Dr. Robert Peoples, CARE's Executive Director and the Carpet and Rug Institute's Director of Sustainability, accepted the award on CARE's behalf. During the award acceptance speech, Dr. Peoples expressed his gratitude for SPE's recognition of CARE's environmental achievements and the hard work and dedication provided by the CARE community to make this new recycling industry a success. Dr. Peoples stated, "We are both honored and humbled to be recognized by GPEC for the first Dan Eberhardt award." Dan Eberhardt was an environmental leader in plastics recycling.

Also honored at the Society of Plastic Engineers' award ceremony was Los Angeles Fiber Company, the largest recycler of post-consumer carpets in the world, for their recycling and recovery of Post- Consumer Carpets. Their production process, logistics system, and sales programs all work together to divert 100 million pounds per year of post- consumer carpet from our nation's landfills. The SPE Plastics Environmental Division recognized Los Angeles Fiber Company for the significant impact they on the recovery of thermoplastic by awarding them the 2007 SPE's Plastics Recycling Award.

Carpet Reclamation Network Expands to 40

The Carpet Reclamation Network continues to expand as an increasing number of facilities open their door to collect and recycle post-consumer carpet across the United States and Canada. The Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) is pleased to announce the Carpet Reclamation Network has gone international with the inclusion of our new Reclamation Partner, Nylene Canada Inc of Amprior, Canada.

The past year has shown tremendous growth in the number of Carpet Reclamation Centers available to receive post-consumer carpet in different regions across the nation. Since January of 2006, 28 new facilities have been joined the Carpet Reclamation Network helping to increase the amount of carpet diverted from our nation's landfills.

All totaled, there are now 40 such facilities within the network. If you would like to know more about the carpet recovery effort or to locate a carpet reclamation facility near you, please visit CARE website.
