Five Cleaning Solutions Earn SOA Recognition

CRI Seal of ApprovalIt has been a busy and productive two weeks for those seeking certification as a CRI Seal of Approval certified cleaning product. A total of five new products have joined the SOA family under the category as word continues to spread that some carpet manufacturers have made a decision to tie carpet warranties to the use of CRI SOA-approved products.

Four of the five products qualified as pre-sprays with one of those also qualifying as a spot remover, and one solution qualified under the in-tank category. Each product passed a series of stringent tests performed by an independent laboratory in order to make the list of cleaning solutions.

FiberFresh Crystallizing Cleaner & Spotter earned designation as both a pre-spray and spot remover. Green For Carpets passed the stringent tests as a pre-spray. Both of those products are manufactured by ServiceMaster Clean, headquartered in Memphis, Tenn. Safeguard Traffic Lane Cleaner, manufactured by Daley International of Chicago, IL., earned its stripes as a pre-spray as did ChemSpec's DFC 105. ChemSpec is headquartered in Baltimore, MD. The in- tank solution earning SOA designation was ProChem's Dry Slurry. ProChem is located Chandler, AZ.

The tests for spot removers, pre-sprays and in-tank solutions include protocols for efficacy (removing stains), resoiling (whether the product attracts soil at an accelerated rate), pH (excessively acid or alkaline products can affect dyes and fibers), optical brighteners (can adversely affect color, appearance and performance) and colorfastness to light (residues on pile yarn can accelerate color change).

To date there are 66 cleaning solutions which have earned SOA designation as being among the best cleaners on the market.

Five new Extractors Added to SOA List

SOA and Space Foundation Gold Silver and BronzeA total of five new extractors have earned their way on to the Seal of Approval-certified extractors list, including three silver-level certifications and two bronze-level certifications.

The 860 Nissan Truck Mount manufactured by All Cleaning Equipment of Las Vegas, NV., joined Powr- Flite's portable PFX1350 Perfect Heat and CFR's portable Pro 500 as silver level designations. Powr- Flite also had a self-contained unit make the bronze level in its PFX9005 Prowler model. Sandra Plastic's Sniper self-contained unit also earned bronze level certification. Powr-Flite is headquartered in Ft. Worth, TX., as is CFR. Sandra Plastics is out of Huntington Beach, CA.

The SOA certification distinguishes the extractors as having passed a series of stringent tests measuring three performance criteria: amount of soil removed from the carpet, amount of residual water left in the carpet and impact of the machine on the fibers and appearance. Certified extractors are rated gold, silver or bronze based on the amount of soil they remove.

A total of 44 extractors are now certified as being among the best on the market with their SOA designation.

CRI Makes Headway with CEFPI Attendance

CRI manager of government affairs Jennifer Mendez gave a presentation and worked a booth at the recent Council of Educational Facility Planners, International (CEFPI) annual convention in Phoenix, AZ. Mendez had the opportunity to meet with several key facility managers from various states who were interested in information on carpets in schools. The information was well-received as Mendez spent quality time with several state procurement decision-makers who indicated they preferred carpet in schools but had been getting some resistance within their respective states.

CARE Part of Empire Energy Expo

Environmental Business AssociationCarpet America Recovery Effort (CARE) executive director Bob Peoples will be on the agenda for the 6th Annual Empire Energy & Environmental Exposition. The Expo will be held in Syracuse, NY on September 25- 26, and Peoples is part of the Creating Green Products and Processes session on the 25th. With so much attention of late being paid to Greening New York's schools, the session should prove to be an excellent multiplier of the CARE and CRI messages.

Watershed Clean-up Date Set

The 12th Annual Conasauga Watershed Clean-up will take place on October 28th from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Last year over 300,000 pounds of trash were pulled out of Georgia's waterways by volunteers. As part of Georgia's Annual Waterway Clean-up and the Northwest Georgia United Way's Make a Difference Day, Keep Dalton/Whitfield Beautiful and The Nature Conservancy, this year's event will take place at four locations:

  • Lower King's Bridge/Norton Bridge on the Conasauga River
  • Holly Creek in Murray County on the Chattahoochie National Forest
  • Mill Creek Tributary in the city of Dalton
  • Chickamauga Creek in the city of Ringgold

Volunteers from carpet manufacturers play a big role in the clean-up and Shaw Industries is one of the main sponsors of the event. For more information contact the Nature Conservancy at 706.279-9001

Peoples among Six Candidates for USGBC Board

US Green Buiding CouncilCRI's Bob Peoples is one of six candidates for the Trade Association Slot on the Board of Directors for the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). This is the first time the USGBC has allowed for a trade association slot on their board. Peoples serves as Director of Sustainability for CRI as well as Executive Director of the Carpet America Recovery Effort.

Directors uphold the vision, values and mission of the Council. They make key decisions about how the Council serves its membership, educates the industry, and advances their mission. By voting, you help to shape the Council's future - and by extension the future of green building.

Voting in USGBC has always been one company, one vote. That still holds true, but this year the Board has opened up voting to every contact affiliated with a USGBC member company or organization and who has a site user account with USGBC under his/her organization's member number. Here's how it works: every vote by a registered member contact counts as a percentage of the vote from his/her company. To the extent member contacts from one company cast different votes, candidates may receive a percentage of a vote, resulting in decimals in the voting tally. We encourage every member contact to make your voice heard, and vote for the 2007 Board.
