Four Extractors, One System Join CRI SOA Family

Seal of Approval - Gold, Silver, Bronze SealA trio of extractors manufactured by Windsor Industries has earned their way on to the Seal of Approval-certified extractors list, including two self-contained units that earned gold level certification. Another unit manufactured by Century 400 also joins the list, earning silver level certification. The Agitator 20® System which includes the Agitator 20 self-contained carpet extractor manufactured by U.S. Products with Prochem Ultrapac prespray was also certified as a SOA system at the gold level.

The SOA certification distinguishes the extractors as having passed a series of stringent tests measuring three performance criteria: amount of soil removed from the carpet, amount of residual water left in the carpet and impact of the machine on the fibers and appearance. Certified extractors are rated gold, silver or bronze based on the amount of soil they remove.

In the systems category, the SOA designation certifies that both the extractor and the recommended cleaning solution have each passed the various SOA tests to earn the grade.

The Admiral 8 Carpet Extractor Model ADM8 and the Expert Small Area Extractor Model EXP manufactured by Windsor Industries each passed the necessary tests to earn gold certification. Century 400's Diamondback Stormchaser Carpet Extractor Model 900-05 passed the necessary tests to earn silver certification as did Windsor's Dominator 250 Carpet Extractor Model D250. Extractors that exceed average soil removal standards receive a bronze rating. Those achieving higher soil removal receive a silver rating, and those receiving the highest level of measurable soil removal are awarded a gold level SOA.

CRI Now Has Service Provider Agreement in Place

CRI Seal of ApprovalThe Carpet and Rug Institute encourages the use of its Seal of Approval logo, and/or label by qualified service providers. In order to protect and assure the proper use of the highly recognized program's symbols and identities, an agreement outlining these guidelines must be executed by the service provider. Any service provider using Seal of Approval equipment and cleaning products together are now eligible to display the logo on their trucks and/or marketing materials as long as they have signed this agreement, provided contact information along with a list of SOA certified equipment and chemicals being used in your normal day to day carpet cleaning operation. In addition to execution of the Participation Agreement, an annual fee is also required. This fee of $25 must be submitted at time of application for use of the SOA logo.

CRI will also provide high resolution images of the official SOA seal upon request. We are also in the process of working with a supplier of high quality vinyl decals to make available 12 inch diameter decals. These decals, suitable for do it yourself installation on trucks and vans, will be available at nominal cost through the CRI Publications Desk. Call Susan Newberry at 706.428-2114 for details on availability and cost.

EPA Sustainability Research Strategy Endorsed by Advisers

US Environmental Protection AgencyEPA proposals to support environmental sustainability within the agency are unanimously endorsed in a draft report by the Science Advisory Board (SAB) Environmental Engineering Committee. The group reviewed two drafts issued in April, a Sustainability Research Strategy and a multi-year research plan, Science & Technology for Sustainability. "The strategy and plan clearly support the agency's transition from the historical single media or 'stovepipe' approach to environmental protection to a multifaceted systems approach that balances competing environmental, economic and societal interests," the report states.

CRI has been working diligently with the EPA to get them beyond the tunnel vision focus on recycle content to a real clear focus on sustainability. This is certainly a significant step in that direction. The carpet industry has a long history of adhering to the three-legged sustainability approach and welcomes such a move by the agency.

CRI Responds To New York State Guidelines

CRI, with the support of the Technical Issues Committee, has been in contact with the state of New York regarding their Guidelines and Specifications for the Procurement and use of Environmentally Sensitive Cleaning and Maintenance Products for all Public and Nonpublic Elementary and Secondary Schools in New York State.

In response to the guideline which recommends "that schools minimize the use of carpeting in student occupied areas and reiterated the practicality of using walk off mats" CRI pulled together a list of 14 peer-reviewed scientific studies that bolster the positive benefits of having carpet in the learning areas. Various sections of the information also clearly define the value of keeping the carpet clean and dry which can be accomplished at a lower cost than maintaining smooth surface floorcovering. In concluding, CRI asked the state to remove the carpet guideline from its report.
