CIRI Supports Cleaning Green Versus green cleaning

Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI)The Board of Directors of the Cleaning Industry Research Institute (CIRI) has issued a formal policy on the important area of green cleaning.

"We commend the advocates of green cleaning for what they have done for our industry," noted Jim Harris, CIRI Chairman of the Board. "However, we are concerned that there are times when decisions are made to go 'green' that can have an impact on the actual cleaning process, resulting in a less healthy environment. The goal of CIRI is to place cleaning practices on a solid scientific basis, and then work with organizations like Green Seal or Design for the Environment to ensure that the green practices they recommend continue to provide effective cleaning and sanitization."

CIRI reiterates that the emphasis must be on cleaning first and then green; that is, cleaning safely and effectively as well as being environmentally sound.

Green Label Plus Program Goes International

CRI Green Label PlusThe popular CRI Green Label Plus Program definitely has an international flavor to it these days. Canadian carpet manufacturers have been part of the program since its inception, but recently companies from Australia and China have all submitted and passed the stringent testing.

Other States Looking at CHPS Implementation

Nearly all New England states are moving toward implementation of California's Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS). Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont are all working toward adoption of the protocol. Missing from the list of states considering adoption, for unknown reasons, is Connecticut. CRI was active in Connecticut earlier this year working on the issue of IAQ in schools. The protocol originated in California several years ago and was widely adopted there. CRI played a role in discussion regarding carpet as it is addressed in CHPS. Each state may make slight modifications to the guidelines, but overall CRI regards the guidelines’ approach to carpet favorably. Efforts are underway in New York state as well to implement the CHPS guidelines.

Details of EU Marking Available

Beginning in January 2007, CE-Marking will be mandatory for all floorcoverings for indoor use sold in Europe, as they fall under the so-called CPD, the ‘Construction Products Directive’. This directive regulates the “essential requirements for building products. The CE-Mark shows to the consumer that the product complies with the CPD and fulfils the essential requirements, which are closely linked to safety issues related to the product and its use. Floorcoverings not complying with the essential requirements as listed in the harmonized standard EN 14041 can no longer be sold within the EU. Excluded from this regulation are rugs, as they are not subject of EN 14041.

Details can be found in the latest edition of the European Carpet and Rug Association newsletter, including the essential requirements that are mandatory and relevant pictograms that must be shown on the CE label. The full text of the document is available and can be acquired by contacting James Beach.

ANSI Draft Sustainable Carpet Standard

A kick-off meeting of the Joint Committee working on the ANSI Draft Sustainable Carpet Standard (NSF 140) was held in Ann Arbor, MI at the headquarters of NSF International on July 27th. A balanced workgroup has laid out plans and a schedule to refine and advance the draft standard with a goal of completion by the end of 2007. While we have adequate carpet industry representation on the Joint Committee, we would like to solicit additional participation by the A&D community. Thus, if you or anyone you know in this area would be interested in working on this leadership effort, please contact Bob Peoples directly as shown below. A number of task groups have been formed each designed to focus on specific elements of the standard. In addition to the carpet standard effort, NSF is also working with BIFMA, ACT and the Resilient Flooring Association on the development of similar sustainable product standards. We will be working to insure good communication among these industry group.
