Interface Receives EPA LMOP “Energy Partner of the Year” AwardThe United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently announced that Interface Flooring Systems is the recipient of the Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) “Energy Partner of the Year” award. It is given in recognition of the company’s role in identifying an opportunity for the City of LaGrange, Interface and other businesses in the South Georgia community to convert methane from a local landfill into renewable energy. The award was presented at the Ninth Annual LMOP Conference & Project Expo in Baltimore, MD. The landfill gas project was initiated in 2001 when Interface approached the City of LaGrange about the possibility of converting yesterday’s waste (the contents of the landfill) to tomorrow’s fuel. Working in partnership with the EPA’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program (LMOP) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), Interface and the City were able to demonstrate the clear environmental, social and economic benefits. For more information about Mannington United States Ranks 28th on EnvironmentA pilot nation-by-nation study of environmental performance shows that just six nations - led by New Zealand, followed by five from Northern Europe - have achieved 85 percent or better success in meeting a set of critical environmental goals ranging from clean drinking water and low ozone levels to sustainable fisheries and low greenhouse gas emissions. The study, jointly produced by Yale and Columbia Universities, ranked the United States 28th over all, behind most of Western Europe, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia, Costa Rica and Chile, but ahead of Russia and South Korea. The bottom half of the rankings is largely filled with the countries of Africa and Central and South Asia. Pakistan and India both rank among the 20 lowest-scoring countries, with overall success rates of 41.1 percent and 47.7 percent, respectively. Contact Frank Hurd at 706.428-2136. EPA Asks Companies To Eliminate Chemical ProductionThe Environmental Protection Agency has asked eight chemical companies to work to eliminate use of a chemical that is a key ingredient in the production of stain resistent materials. The initiative calls for a 95 percent reduction in environmental emissions and product content levels of perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, and associated chemicals by 2010. The companies also are being asked to work toward the elimination of PFOA and associated chemicals from emissions and products by 2015, but the agency conceded that may not be possible because of costs and technological hurdles. Companies asked to participate are Dupont, 3M/Dyneon Arkema Inc., AGC Chemicals/Asahi Glass, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Clariant Corp., Daikin and Solvay Solexis. The EPA is awaiting a final decision from a science advisory board reviewing a draft risk assessment of PFOA. The EPA is working to add PFOA to the agency's Toxic Release Inventory.
