Paul Frierson Honored with Joseph Smrekar Award

Paul Frierson, former Vice President of The Dixie Group
Paul Frierson
Paul Frierson, former vice president of The Dixie Group, was presented the prestigious Joseph J. Smrekar Memorial Award at the Annual Conference. The award was conceived by Milliken & Company for CRI as a memorial to Dr. Joseph J. Smrekar who passed away in 1998. Through the generosity of Milliken & Company, “Dr. Joe” was able to serve CRI on numerous technical committees and boards as chairman, representative, and member. The award states, “Many of the technical achievements in the carpet industry can be attributed to the leadership of this exceptional individual, scholar, scientist, respected researcher and teacher.” This award recognizes individuals who have similarly shown unusual and exemplary service to the carpet and rug industry.

Mr. Frierson has served on many CRI committees and the board over the years. He became involved in CRI activities in the 90s and has served the organization in many roles. He most recently served as chairman of the CRI Operating Committee. In addition to having served on numerous CRI committees, Mr. Frierson has been on the Dixie Group’s Board of Directors since 1988 and just recently retired from active management at the Dixie Group in 2003. He continues to be active in both the community and the industry.

Past winners of the prestigious award include Carey Mitchell, Howard Elder PhD., Robert Cannon, Alan Luedtke PhD., Dr. E.P. “Rusty’’ Willimon, Jim Jolly, Dan Frierson and Frank Endrenyi.

Also honored at the event for their service was Shaw Industry’s Steve Bradfield, who served as Chairman for the Market Issues Committee, Frierson, who served as Chairman of the CRI Operating Committee, and Grizzle, who served as Chairman of the Board for 2005.

Werner Braun Gives Update on the “State of the CRI”

Werner Braun, CRI President
Werner Braun
CRI President Werner Braun gave his annual “State of the CRI” presentation. About five years ago, the CRI Board of Directors (BOD) started focusing more on issues that were perceived to be barriers to the industry’s profitability and growth. As with any industry, these barriers, or issues, change.

Just recently the BOD narrowed the scope of CRI’s efforts again, on issues currently considered of prime importance. Braun talked about those issues and how CRI will be addressing them.
