In This Issue: CRI Applauds USGBC Board Vote To Allow Trade Association MembershipOn August 4, the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) Board of Directors voted unanimously to allow trade associations membership into the organization. The Carpet and Rug Institute has long been a supporter of the USGBC and is excited about the new opportunity this move will present. This decision will allow CRI to be more engaged with the group as a partner and will lend a consensus voice for the industry. The hope is that CRI continue in its leadership role in reinforcing the wisdom of this decision by the USGBC Board. Contact Bob Peoples at 706.428.2115. Some Get It ... Some Don’tNigel Maynard, a residential architect who also serves as the Architectural Design and products Senior Editor for Residential Architect, a magazine that delivers business, design, and product information to residential architect, was recently quoted in a Ceramic Tile publication with some not so kind words towards carpet. “dirt and dust get trapped in the shag. Wet carpet could also provide a breeding ground for mold. This is bad news for allergy sufferers. You often can’t see the dirt or dust. Hard surfaces do not have this problem. Homeowners can see the dust and know when to clean up, which makes for a much healthier home.” Needless to say, CRI is in the process of contacting Mr. Maynard with some educational material. Then there was this lead paragraph in a recent story in the Chattanooga Times- Free Press about children heading back to school: “Five-year-old Cameron Jefferies said she is looking forward to school because she likes sitting on the carpet” Wouldn’t it be nice if every story started like that! TVA to Host HVAC Humidity Control WorkshopTVA has announced an HVAC Humidity Control Workshop to be held December 8-9, 2005 at the Park Vista Resort Hotel in Gatlinburg, Tenn. Joe Lstiburek, PhD, P.E. will lead the professional development seminar entitled “Moisture and Humidity Control for Commercial Buildings - Not a Dry Topic!” to explore the causes and prevention of moisture and humidity problems due to building envelope and HVAC failures. The CRI efforts to the A&E, building owner and operators, school systems, etc. has many parallels with TVA's interest in promoting effective HVAC systems.
