TRI (Toxics Release Inventory) Data Used for Enforcement & Regulatory Purposes

For the first time, representatives from regulated industries and environmental advocacy groups were invited to participate in EPA's TRI National Conference (Feb. 8-10). According to BNA's Daily Environment Report, at the opening session, attendees were briefed on how TRI data is used to support proposed regulations (or relevant exemptions), encourage companies to reduce emissions, and even to help federal and state enforcement officials decide where to focus their efforts. In this last use, EPA officials noted that enforcement agencies often take a second look at industry sectors or companies that release large (though legal) amounts of certain toxics to make sure they are in compliance with environmental regulations. The session also included information on how the analysis of TRI data has helped identify inaccurate information (such as over-reporting of emissions).
