In This Issue: Sustainability Report to be Released at Greenbuild The carpet industry's fourth annual Sustainability Report will be released
in conjunction with this year's Greenbuild International Conference and Expo
in Portland, Oregon, on November 10-12, 2004. This year's report will be a 28-page
booklet documenting the carpet industry's practices in all three phases of sustainability:
environmental, social and economic. The report will also be available for download
off the carpet-rug.org website following its release in November. EU Evaluating FSC Repeal The European Commission is currently reviewing U.S. legislation that would
repeal the Foreign Sales Corporation (FSC) tax system and it will soon offer
an opinion on whether it believes that this legislation complies with requirements
set forth by the World Trade Organization. This opinion will affect the European
Union (EU) decision to lift or modify sanctions imposed on numerous U.S. industries
including the carpet industry. The punitive tariff now stands at 12 percent.
The final version of the legislation was sent to the President on October 21.
Magazine Article Gets Facts Wrong on CarpetA recent article which appeared in the magazine House Beautiful was entitled
"Make Your Home Nontoxic'' and linked the use of carpet to allergy and
asthma symptoms. The article said that carpet made of nylon was aggravating
an asthmatic child who lived in the house because she was breathing in tiny
particles of plastic. Once rid of the carpet, the article said, the symptoms
went away and she no longer had to use an inhaler. CRI sent the editor and the
author of the article a note informing them of the benefits of carpet along
with information on indoor air quality and proper carpet maintenance. Once again,
this story provides a reminder that this type of incomplete information still
finds its way into mainstream media. CRI's Braun Gives Presentation to Milliken Sales ForceCRI President Werner Braun recently met with the Milliken & Company sales force in LaGrange, Georgia, and presented the group with his presentation of "Carpet For A Better Environment.'' Mr. Braun armed the sales force with pertinent information which could be used in the field to combat urban legends and other carpet de-selection issues that sometimes arise in the market place. Mr. Braun has given the presentation to several member companies over the past year. If anyone is interested in having Mr. Braun speak to their sales forces, please contact James Beach at 706.428.2116.CEU Presentations in Atlanta Receive Excellent ReviewsOn October 21, the Atlanta architect and design community heard Bob Peoples
