Focus Has Been Raised on Pirated American Goods

The U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative announced on October 4 a new program/initiative created to raise the awareness and focus on intellectual property violations practiced by countries exporting goods to the U.S. The program is called Strategy Targeting Organized Piracy (STOP). The overall goal of the program is to eliminate illegal trade in pirated American goods, make the efforts of counterfeiters more difficult to advance, and raise the awareness of the problem of piracy in counterfeit goods.

In connection with STOP, the U.S. government will,

  • work with small and medium size companies to help them obtain and enforce their intellectual property rights (IPR) abroad

  • publicize names of overseas firms that deal in counterfeit trade

  • stop fake products at U.S. border entry points

  • cooperate with industry to develop corporate control systems to insure companies are not unknowingly trading in fakes

  • work with law enforcement to review existing laws to strengthen penalties and eliminate loopholes

  • work with overseas governments to encourage their crack down on pirated goods and strict law enforcement
