CRI Hosts Award PresentationCRI played host for the presentation of the NAM Legislative Excellence Award to U.S. Representative Nathan Deal at the CRI facility on March 14. About 35 people, including CRI and NAM members, local government leaders and staff attended the gathering. The Award is presented by NAM to members of Congress who show support of business and industry through their leadership and voting record. It was noted that Congressman Deal’s voting record favored business 95% of the time. The Congressman presented an update on current issues at the national level and entertained questions from the audience. CRI and NAM wish to thank Linda Harrington and Joyce Schuler of CRI for making the arrangements for this successful event. Chinese Task ForceCRI participated in the first meeting of the NAM Council Chinese Task Force on March 20. Approximately 25 representatives from a wide variety of manufacturing related trade associations attended the meeting which was held to discuss how a number of international business issues might be resolved. The Task Force identified four broad categories of challenges now faced by manufacturers in dealing with the Chinese marketplace: 1) the increased volume of Chinese products exported to the U.S., 2) The relocation of manufacturing processes and facilities to China, 3) protection of intellectual property rights, and 4) access to Chinese markets for U.S. made products. Each of the categories was discussed and expanded into sub-categories. Additional meetings will be held in the near future. A meeting to discuss Chinese product counterfeiting specifically will be held on March 24, 2003. Contact John Miller at 706.428.2109. CRI Travels to MaineJennifer Mendez of CRI traveled to Maine earlier this week. She shared with the leadership CRI’s model legislation and resolution regarding healthy school environments and encouraged Maine to adopt our model. Jennifer also met with Ed Miller, the head of the Maine Lung Association. She showed Mr. Miller the video that CRI has prepared for allergists and briefed him on CRI’s work with the national chapter of the American Lung Association. Contact Jennifer Mendez at 703.875.0634. American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and ImmunologyCRI was well represented at the AAAAI 60th Anniversary Meeting in Denver, Colorado, March 7-12, 2003. Louise Dobbs staffed a booth and Steve Phillips met with potential allies and others. Once again our message, “carpet traps dust and allergens and keeps them out of the breathing zone” was received with, “I never thought of it that way before. What you say does make sense.” CRI will follow up with contacts made to promote our key messages to this critical audience of allergy physicians.
