Data Collection for CARE First Annual ReportThe University of Georgia Department of Textiles, Merchandising and Interiors is collecting data for the first annual report of the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE). The report, to be published in March, will include information about the various methods employed to manage waste carpet (reuse, recycling, use of cement kilns and waste-to energy facilities, and land filling), the market opportunities for products made from recycled carpet, and related state and federal efforts. Surveys are being sent to carpet manufacturers, handlers/collectors, recyclers, and state and federal government agencies. All CRI member manufacturers will receive this survey. Please have the appropriate staff members complete the survey. For more information, visit the CARE website at www.carpetrecovery.org. Contact Joan Seelaus at 706.428.2123. Sample Sales Tax LegislationThe 2003 Session of the Georgia General Assembly will commence its work on Monday, January 13. The Assembly members will address a number of challenging issues including tort reform, education initiatives and a re-districting plan. A draft of a bill that will establish permanent sales tax rates for residential and commercial carpet samples is presently under review by key legislators and staff of Governor-elect Perdue. The bill has been crafted as a joint effort of CRI and the GTMA. Debate and discussion surrounding the bill will follow as the formal legislative review process begins. There are about 10 research summaries posted, but the site should contain 500 summaries by year-end. CRI is a founding member of this site and the CRI logo is prominently displayed. More importantly, CRI will have the opportunity to place applicable studies and research summaries on the site. For more information, visit http://www.asid.org/news/research_findings/informedesign.asp. 2002 CRI Safety & Health Statistical ProgramLetters have been mailed to the Safety Directors of all CRI member companies regarding the 2002 CRI Safety & Health Statistical Program. The Safety & Health Statistical Program is open to all members of CRI and it is not too late to participate in the 2002 Program. In prior years, two categories have been recognized Manufacturing and Distribution. If we have enough interest from member companies that have not fit into these two categories in prior years, we may be able to create a third category. Contact Charlott Coker at 706.428.2127. Moisture Concrete Seminar Now Were Talking!Moisture intrusion in concrete sub-flooring is a critical factor in the installation of soft surface floorcovering. To begin to address the issue, for the first time ever, a large group of floor covering retailers/contractors, manufacturers, distributors and architects/specifiers was brought together at the same time in one place. It was the Greater New York Floor Covers Association/Industry Promotional Funds recent "Moisture in Concrete Seminar." Howard Olansky (Senior Editor, National Floor Trends and Floor Covering Installer Magazines) said this was the most exciting and productive industry educational meeting for which he has served as a moderator. The star-studded panel consisted of Larry Press, Technical Support Manager, Para-Chem, Christopher Capobianco, Technical Support Manager, Toli, Inc., and Thomas Ruttura, Ruttura & Sons Construction Company. Ruttura, a leading figure in the Concrete Contractors Association "turned the lights on" in every attendees mind when he stated that this was "the first opportunity Ive ever had to sit down with a group of floor covering contractors." All attendees agreed that more communication between all industries was required. The choice was clear. Either continue to drown in the problems of moisture or take the lead in developing meaningful ways to dramatically reduce moisture problems. Moisture instrusion in concrete sub-flooring is a critical factor in the installation of soft surface floorcovering. New SOA Participant has Television DebutCRI promotes the benefits of Seal of Approval participation. One recent benefit was the inclusion of video footage of new SOA participant Jme Palacio of PSI Floor & Fiber Care in Florida. Mr. Palacio was cleaning a carpet as part of a segment for "Parenting and Beyond." The segment deals with carpet and appropriate maintenance being an integral part of improving indoor air quality. Mr. Palacio was recommended for the shoot for the very reason that he is a SOA participant. The video will broadcast in the spring, and CRI will advise Newsline subscribers in advance of the broadcast. Contact Steve Phillips at 706.428.2115. Seal of Approval AdditionsCRI announces the addition of two newly authorized participants in their Seal of Approval Program.
