The strategy of preventative maintenance is as simple as it sounds: You keep your carpet clean by keeping dirt from reaching it.
Corinne Zudonyi, the editor of Facility Cleaning Decisions magazine and CleanLink.com, recently covered the reasons why walk-off mats are great tools for maintaining carpet. Zudonyi highlights the job of Steve Spencer, a facilities specialist at State Farm, who works to perfect the company’s walk-off program by minimizing tracked-in debris, preventing slips, trips and falls, while still providing a visually appealing entryway.
According to Zudonyi, 98 percent of debris and soil will be removed after 39 feet of walk-off. With that in mind, Spencer has designed the interior of State Farm Insurance's headquarters so walk-off matting and tiles stretch 30 to 50 feet into the facility. The walk-off matting and tiles are also strategically placed to provide optimal performance.
“There is so much debris in the parking lot that you never want to see inside the vestibule of the facility,” says Spencer. “Scraper mats are designed to grab and trap that debris.”
The CRI's Carpet Maintenance Guidelines highlight that mats on an entrance's exterior should be used for scraping heavy debris and interior mats should be used to trap smaller particles of dirt.
Having mats at the entrances and exits of facilities is nothing new, but there is a newfound importance as walk-in mats are useful at soil containment and therefore reducing the costs of cleaning and maintenance.
Another tactic of preventative maintenance is keeping walk-off mats clean. Spencer recommends cleaning mats at least once to as many as three times per day. This helps mats remain effective at trapping dirt and keeping it from getting tracked onto the carpet, which Spencer says should make the floor covering last up to three to four years longer.
Using walk-off matting in conjunction with a cleaning strategy of regular vacuuming with a Seal of Approval-certified vacuum and periodic deep cleaning using SOA-approved methods and service providers is the best way to protect and maintain the carpet in your facility.
